Veta, a smart case for your EpiPen, will alert your smartphone if you’ve forgotten or misplaced your EpiPen.

Most people couldn’t imagine heading out the door without their wallet, but it happens. Likewise, severe allergy sufferers shouldn’t leave home without their EpiPen. But in this case, their health could be on the line.

The company Aterica aims to prevent this with Veta, a smart case for your EpiPen. The case synchs up to an app that will alert your smartphone if you’ve forgotten or misplaced your EpiPen. Veta will also notify family members that you have used your EpiPen.

In addition, Veta will ask for confirmation if you’re fine after you’ve pulled the cap on top of the smart case. If you don’t respond, Veta will “provide a loud verbal warning to bystanders in the area to alert them of the medical emergency,” according to Aterica’s site.

“Now that my son is in high school, it’s up to him to manage his anaphylaxis. I need to know he is safe, but I have to give him his independence,” Nikki Payne, the mother of a 14-year-old-son with severe food allergies, said in an Aterica press release. “With Veta, I’ll know that he has his auto-injector with him and won’t have to worry. Veta won’t replace our vigilance, but it will give us an extra level of support and assurance.”

Aterica says that the Veta will be available this fall.
