When it comes to vaccine delivery, the 'Last Mile' is the longest. The challenges to Last Mile vaccine delivery are many: cold chain, supply-chain logistics, climate, topography, conflict, lack of infrastructure and transport.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), fewer than half of children aged 12 to 23 months receive vaccinations and one in seven die from vaccine-preventable deaths.

VNI will begin in the DRC, where recent outbreaks in vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, cholera and yellow fever have killed thousands of people.

As part of the Capstone Design Course, graduating seniors from the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) will work in multidisciplinary teams on VNI’s proposed solutions. At the end of the semester, students will showcase their efforts at the institute-wide Capstone Design Expo.
