00:00 I was one of those weird people who just 00:07 understood music on a different level 00:09 naturally she's a kind of you know x-men 00:19 kind of thing she's a different type of 00:21 human being 00:22 [Music] 00:28 she's amazing she's pretty much the best 00:31 singer I've ever heard and she can't 00:33 hear to be able to look at the ocean in 00:43 silence it gives you the opportunity to 00:47 create whatever you want it to be in the 00:53 moment when I lost my hearing all I 00:56 wanted was to be able to go back to 01:00 where I could hear again when she 01:06 graduated from Longmont high she was 01:08 voted top female vocalist so that the 01:13 dream was kind of queued up my my dream 01:17 and my reality met in college and it was 01:21 perfect for about a month that's all I 01:24 got a month before I stopped being able 01:28 to understand my teachers talking to me 01:30 in class by Christmas I was legally deaf 01:32 in both ears my hearing aids did not 01:34 give me the information that I needed to 01:36 stay a music major and I was dropped 01:39 from the music program we get in a car 01:41 we leave Colorado State University and 01:43 the world gets silent she stops singing 01:50 it's still very it's still very real for 01:55 me I really didn't know what to do 01:59 because my way of expressing myself was 02:03 gone 02:05 I know this hurts but let's go let's 02:08 keep let's keep moving 02:10 learn a song I'll play I'll play the 02:13 guitar in you singing 02:14 and so I I spent time figuring out this 02:18 one song note by note by note just 02:23 seeing this the note into the little 02:25 tuner feel it 02:27 yep I'm right okay next note I don't 02:31 think that people really know the 02:32 backstory of how hard it is to have to 02:35 feel on your body where your voice goes 02:37 he pulled up his guitar I closed my eyes 02:40 after I found my first note and I just 02:42 started singing and that freedom came of 02:45 not being able to judge myself 02:47 [Music] 02:56 it was just Dan and are doing what we 03:00 had done a hundred times before and that 03:04 led me to wanting to figure out how I 03:07 could learn other vibrations to learn 03:10 more about myself to give myself better 03:13 opportunities 03:15 I think America's Got Talent was that 03:18 for her so singing and performing for 03:23 people wasn't scary anymore because I 03:26 knew that if losing my hearing wasn't 03:29 gonna kill me which I always dreamed it 03:31 would what can they take what can they 03:36 take that wasn't already broken nothing 03:42 when I first met Mick we met up and we 03:45 just started having just long 03:47 conversations and he said hey I have 03:54 this interesting idea about music the 03:57 idea was recognizing the fact that the 03:59 Deaf feels music mainly by getting hit 04:02 with one way of a vibration coming off 04:04 these huge subs and speakers that's 04:06 absurd 04:07 that's the reason why I don't go to 04:09 concerts I'm not a part of the 04:10 experience maybe we can figure out how 04:13 to get around the eardrum which 04:15 basically is a receptor of vibration and 04:17 go straight to the brain and the detour 04:19 that we concluded on was going through 04:21 the skin all of a sudden things started 04:26 to take hold and music not impossible 04:28 was born we had had so many 04:30 conversations about how I've created a 04:32 system of feeling music that the 04:35 information could be very helpful for 04:37 them to improve the system in the 04:42 beginning it was a very small operation 04:44 right for a firm use so when Daniel 04:47 communicated with me about music not 04:50 impossible so this is Bob he had limited 04:53 channels but all of the vibrations were 04:55 the same what he was missing was 04:59 intensity difference of vibrations I 05:02 would put the wrists probably to the 05:05 lightest setting they had so much 05:08 potential to go so much further 05:12 let's keep going let's make this better 05:14 we're really good at finding someone who 05:18 needs to be helped in creating a 05:19 solution for that one person what we 05:21 don't have is a track record of taking 05:24 an idea and scaling it to help many and 05:27 that is the secret sauce of Abnett the 05:30 fact that Abnett has come in and made it 05:32 for the masses you saw the magic that is 05:35 happening here and how it's bringing 05:37 about equality that's the incredible 05:40 thing about not impossible labs and 05:43 Avnet they want to figure it out because 05:46 they want to make it impact they want to 05:48 help 05:50 [Music] 05:57 the beautiful thing about music not 05:59 impossible it's saying that you're not 06:01 experiencing it wrong you're 06:04 experiencing it differently let's both 06:06 experience it together here's a bunch of 06:09 information that you've been missing out 06:10 on for a long time ma'am 06:13 here you go she's given a gift not just 06:18 to the deaf community but she's given a 06:21 gift to the hearing community because 06:24 now you've created this equality that 06:26 didn't exist before it's always been 06:28 really important to help create 06:31 community it's it's a bonding it's 06:35 understanding that you could easily be 06:37 this person it's understanding that they 06:39 give me a value just as much as I'm 06:42 giving them even though they're 06:43 different the symphony is going to be a 06:52 completely different experience than 06:54 life is beautiful and translating her 06:58 music to an orchestra it's a bit more of 07:00 a grand sort of presentation I could 07:05 feel when the violins swell 07:10 I mean I can feel you when you when you 07:14 speed up it was just like well here we 07:16 go I can also feel when the oboz or the 07:19 clarinets are leaving so that I can 07:23 understand the picture in its entirety 07:27 but I'm so glad you're here and I hope 07:32 you have a good time this evening ladies 07:35 and gentlemen please welcome to the 07:37 stage Mandy Harvey and then she can 07:41 really like okay 07:42 the technical stuff is here I know what 07:44 is happening on my body in terms of 07:45 vibrations and then it can be expressed 07:47 so she can just okay I'm just singing 07:51 [Music] 08:00 I love that she just it's right back up 08:06 again and she tries so hard it's so 08:10 inspiring you think is very very like 08:12 important to me 08:14 thank you I think if she was talking to 08:17 some physician or occupational therapist 08:20 and she described to them what she 08:22 wanted to do everybody that she would 08:24 have talked to her said she's crazy and 08:25 you ignore your critics you ignore the 08:28 naysayers and that's what she did and 08:31 now she's who she is there are a lot of 08:35 barriers in life and we have the ability 08:37 especially we work together as a team to 08:40 crush those barriers and to change the 08:43 world around us for a positive way she's 08:46 like yeah this happened to me and guess 08:48 what I did I pushed through it was it 08:50 hard hell yeah but you know what you can 08:53 do that too so let's do it together 08:57 I don't sing for myself I can't hear 09:00 myself saying it's not that interesting 09:03 the interesting part is how it affects 09:07 other people and how it creates a 09:10 community and why do you wake up in the 09:14 morning and struggle because I can and I 09:20 choose to because I want to help 09:22 somebody else help help 09:28 [Music] English (auto-generated)
